Street Trees
Street Tree Master Plan
In 1999, Bourke Shire Council adopted the Bourke Street Tree Master Plan. This document was developed with the assistance of a consultant and community consultation.
It is a document designed to help Council and residents plant trees, which are suitable for the area, water restrictions, and soil type, and also helps bring in some themes and continuity into individual streets throughout town.
A main theme in the Street Tree Master Plan is to plant predominately deciduous trees on east-west orientated streets to reduce the risk of houses on the southern side of the street being totally shaded during winter and evergreen trees being designated to streets with a north-south orientation so front yards receive direct sunlight at sometime during the day.
The main vehicular routes through the town are on both east west streets as well as north south orientated streets. As a result of this the same tree has been chosen to highlight this main route so that it is clear for a visitor unfamiliar with the town where exactly they are to go. By using the one tree a clear visual signal is given as to the main route through town taking away the need to introduce more signage to direct traffic.
