Weir Pool

Last modified: September 23, 2009 - 7:16 PM

A survey of the Darling River at Bourke was conducted to determine the size of the weir pool - the amount in the weir once the river has stopped flowing.

Cross sections were taken at 1km intervals, where the depth and width of the river was recorded. From this information the capacity of the weir pool was calculated to be 5,200 megalitres. It was estimated that the pool was approximately 50 river kms long. This information can be used to predict water storage levels when the river has ceased to flow, helping the town to plan water restrictions and other necessary works during times of drought.
